The standard answer is twice a year. In the Hudson Valley, that's the floor, not the rule. The honest answer depends on what's standing over your roof, and around Cornwall, that's often a lot.

The Baseline: Late Spring and Late Fall

Two cleanings handle most open-lot homes: one in late spring, after maple samaras and oak catkins finish, and one in late fall after final leaf drop, which around here means mid-November, later than most national advice assumes, because the oaks off Black Rock Forest hold on stubbornly.

When Two Isn't Enough

Add a third cleaning if any of these describe your property: you back up to Black Rock Forest or sit under the Storm King slopes; you're in the creek valley at Salisbury Mills or on a wooded Mountainville lot; you have hemlocks or white pines overhead, which shed needles year-round, not seasonally; or three or more mature hardwoods stand within fifty feet of the roofline.

Species matters more than tree count
Oaks drop late and heavy, and their leaves mat into a waterproof layer. Maples front-load spring with samaras. Hemlock and pine never really stop. One overhanging oak can out-clog three ornamentals.

Signs You Waited Too Long

Water sheeting over the gutter edge in rain. Plants growing in the gutter, which means soil has formed. Staining or streaks down the siding. Sagging runs, because waterlogged debris is heavy enough to pull hangers loose. Any of these means clean now, not at the next scheduled season, and it's worth a look at our repair page if the sag has already started.

What Skipping Cleanings Actually Costs

A missed $200 cleaning doesn't cost $200. It costs whatever the water does next: rotted fascia ($150–$600 in repairs if caught early), staining, foundation pooling, and in winter, ice dams backed up behind frozen debris. The cheapest gutter maintenance is the boring, on-schedule kind. Full pricing detail is in our Cornwall cost guide.

Or Change the Math with Guards

If your lot honestly needs three cleanings a year, micromesh guards can cut that to a light annual check. They're not free of maintenance, nothing is, but on heavy-canopy Hudson Valley lots they change the schedule more than anything else you can buy. Our guards guide covers what works under oak canopy and what doesn't.
